VALORANT Error Code 43: How to Fix It When You Cannot Reach the Main Menu

When VALORANT displays Error Code 43, you will usually see a system timeout message and be unable to reach the game’s main menu. Riot Client may open and VALORANT may launch, but the process stops before you can enter the game.

Riot officially defines VAL 43 as “A system has timed out” and recommends restarting Riot Client first. The code shows that a timeout occurred during startup or platform communication, but it cannot identify one fixed cause by itself. Do not assume it is automatically a network issue, a client issue, a server problem, or a Riot Vanguard problem. Following the point where the failure occurs is more useful than reinstalling the game or changing many settings immediately.

Check Whether Riot Is Handling a Service Issue First

Open Riot’s official service status page, select your region, and check whether VALORANT has scheduled maintenance, login-service issues, or another known incident. During a version update, shortly after maintenance, or during a temporary service disruption, many players may be unable to enter the game normally.

If Riot has already confirmed a service issue, reinstalling the client or changing PC settings repeatedly is unlikely to help. Waiting for the service to recover is the better option.

Also make sure Riot Client and VALORANT have no pending updates, unfinished downloads, or repair tasks. If the client is still updating, let the process finish before launching the game again.

Fully Restart Riot Client, Not Only the Game Window

Riot’s first recommendation for Error Code 43 is to restart Riot Client completely. Closing only the VALORANT window may leave the client running in the background, which can cause the next launch to retain the same abnormal state.

Follow these steps:

  1. Exit VALORANT.
  2. Find the Riot Client icon in the system tray and select Exit.
  3. Open Task Manager and confirm that no Riot Client or VALORANT processes remain.
  4. Open Riot Client again, then launch VALORANT.

If you can enter the main menu after doing this, the issue was more likely a temporary startup or platform-initialization timeout. If VAL 43 appears every time you launch the game, continue with the checks below.

Do Not Treat VAL 43 as a Vanguard Error by Default

Some older guides tell players to change the vgc service, reinstall Riot Vanguard, or delete Riot Client configuration files. These are not Riot’s direct troubleshooting steps for VAL 43.

When Vanguard is not initialized, requires a restart, or cannot start correctly, VALORANT usually displays a specific VAN or Vanguard-related message. Only check the vgc service or reinstall Riot Vanguard when you also see one of those errors, or when Vanguard is clearly unable to run.

Deleting Riot Client’s local configuration files is not a standard fix for VAL 43 either. It may reset login details, language settings, or client preferences, but it may not resolve the timeout itself.

If the Error Continues, Compare Another Network

VAL 43 appears during platform initialization. Your current network environment may be one contributing factor, but the error code alone does not prove that your network is the cause.

First, pause background tasks such as cloud synchronization, system downloads, livestreaming, and large file uploads. If you use a VPN, proxy, or several network tools, turn them off and test with one normal connection only. Multiple tools changing the connection route at the same time can make Riot Client login or initialization less stable.

Then launch VALORANT once through a mobile hotspot or another stable network. This is not a search for the connection with the lowest ping. It is a comparison test to determine whether the issue only occurs on your usual connection.

  • If another network lets you reach the main menu reliably while your normal network continues to show VAL 43, your home network environment or default connection route deserves more attention.
  • If the same error appears across several networks while Riot has announced a service issue, wait for Riot to resolve it.
  • If only one PC continues to show the error while other environments work normally, check Riot Client updates, the Windows environment, or security software instead.

Test GearUP When the Connection Route Looks Suspicious

If the problem is clearly concentrated on your usual network and improves after switching networks, use GearUP to test VALORANT’s connection route.

GearUP improves your network routing, which can quickly confirm whether a routing-node problem is causing the connection failure. Your game data will be transmitted over more stable, less congested routes. It also provides solutions for both PC and console platforms that are easy to use.

Test GearUP When the Connection Route Looks Suspicious

Console players can choose the router plugin, which is better suited for living-room scenarios when you do not want to turn on a PC:

Select VALORANT and the appropriate server in GearUP, start the boost, then reopen Riot Client and launch the game. Do not judge the result only by the values shown in the booster. Check whether the previous issue has actually changed: whether you reach the main menu more reliably, whether VAL 43 appears less often, and whether startup no longer stalls for a long time.

When Should You Check Security Software or Reinstall?

If VAL 43 only appears occasionally and a full Riot Client restart resolves it, reinstalling the game is usually unnecessary. Continue checking the client and system environment only in situations such as these:

  • Riot Client or VALORANT updates repeatedly fail.
  • The client remains stuck during updating, repairing, or launching.
  • Your firewall or third-party security software shows a clear block or interception record.
  • The same PC cannot enter the game through multiple networks.
  • Riot’s services are operating normally, but VAL 43 continues to appear over an extended period.

First, check whether your security software has specifically blocked Riot Client, VALORANT, or Riot Vanguard. Do not permanently disable your firewall just to troubleshoot. Reinstallation is more appropriate when the client cannot update, repair, or launch normally, not as the default first response to VAL 43.

Still Cannot Reach the Main Menu?

Riot currently notes that some error codes may display incorrectly. When submitting a report, do not record only VAL 43. Keep the complete error message and note exactly where the launch process stops.

When contacting Riot Support, include:

  • A screenshot of the error
  • The time it occurred and your region
  • Your network type
  • Whether you tested another network
  • Whether Riot Client has completed all updates
  • Any other Vanguard or client error messages

The key to handling VAL 43 is not guessing one fixed cause. Fully restart Riot Client first, confirm Riot’s service status, and compare another network to see whether the issue is limited to your current connection. Use GearUP for further testing only when the connection route appears to be the likely factor.
