Players cite Riot's netcode, server-side hit registration, and favor-the-shooter compensation as evidence that ping does not really matter below a certain threshold. Scroll through any Valorant subreddit and you will find dozens of players insisting they hit Radiant on 90ms. That belief is costing them rounds they do not even realize they are losing.

Here is the reality: in a game where the time-to-kill with a Vandal headshot is zero milliseconds, every millisecond of latency shifts the outcome of peeker duels. A 50ms ping advantage over your opponent means your inputs reach the server a full 50ms before theirs. In a game running at 128-tick servers, that is roughly 6.4 server ticks of advantage. Six ticks is enough for your headshot to register before your opponent's client even knows you rounded the corner.

Breaking Down the Ping Tiers

Ping is not a single number with a simple "good" or "bad" label. It is a gradient, and each tier has distinct gameplay implications that compound as the number rises.

0-15ms: The competitive baseline. At this range, you are effectively playing with server-authoritative real-time feedback. Your shots register on the same tick they are fired. Your movement updates are nearly instantaneous. This is the ping range of LAN tournaments and players living within a few hundred kilometers of a major Riot server node. At this tier, when you die, it is your fault.

15-35ms: Imperceptible in isolation. You will not notice any delay, but the server is now 2 to 4 ticks behind your local actions. Your damage reports will show hits that the server rejected because your target had already moved. You will experience rubberbanding during rapid direction changes. Agent abilities with precise timing windows like Jett dash, Yoru teleport, and Chamber rendezvous become unreliable. You can still play, but your agent pool shrinks to those that do not depend on frame-perfect ability timing.

100-150ms: Significant disadvantage. Every interaction feels delayed. You will frequently die after reaching cover on your screen. Operator flicks that looked clean on your client will miss. Ability noises will play after the ability has already resolved. You are no longer playing Valorant; you are playing a prediction game where success depends on anticipating enemy positions rather than reacting to them.

150ms and above: Functionally unplayable. The server will begin rejecting your movement updates, causing teleportation. Shots will simply not register. You will be kicked for high ping in Competitive mode.

The Visibility Gap

Here is the single most important concept in ping mechanics: your screen is always playing catch-up. When you peek a corner, the server does not know you have moved until your position update arrives. Your opponent does not see your model until the server relays your updated position to their client. The total delay between you pressing the movement key and your model appearing on the opponent's screen is your ping plus the opponent's ping plus server processing time.

If you have 80ms ping and your opponent has 20ms, you are visible to them for roughly 100ms before their model appears on your screen. In a game where the average human reaction time to a visual stimulus is 200-250ms, that 100ms head start means your opponent has already processed your position and begun their flick while you are still seeing an empty corner. You are not losing because your aim is bad. You are losing because your information is stale.

Closing the Gap

The ideal solution is physical proximity to the server, but most players cannot relocate their homes for a video game. The practical solution is optimizing the network path between your home and Riot's servers.

Choose the correct server region. In Valorant's settings, you can manually select your preferred server. Test your ping to each available region using Riot's built-in diagnostics or a third-party ping testing tool.
