Destiny 2 Tapir Error: What It Is and Effective Solutions
Key Information
Tapir Error in Destiny 2 stems from a server connection failure. In regions such as Russia and Belarus, it is caused by the game blocking access; Bungie has confirmed this. However, this is not without solutions. This article gives a detailed analysis of the Tapir Error and provides platform-specific countermeasures.
Which Regions Might Encounter the Tapir Error?
Objectively, players in any region can encounter this error, since it indicates an inability to connect to Destiny 2 servers, but such cases are relatively rare.
For players in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and other CIS countries and regions, it is almost guaranteed. In Russian the error is shown as ОШИБКА. Because Destiny 2 is a multi-platform game, below I provide solutions for different platforms.

General Solutions (PC & Consoles)
According to player feedback, changing the DNS is a practical and effective method. Both PC and consoles can modify DNS settings; you can refer to the following steps:
On PC
- Open Settings → Network & Internet → Advanced network settings.
- Click More network adapter options.
- Right-click your active connection (Wi-Fi or Ethernet) → Properties.
- Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) → Properties.
- Select Use the following DNS server addresses.
- Enter your preferred and alternate DNS addresses.
- Click OK and restart your connection.
On PlayStation
- Go to Settings → Network → Settings → Set Up Internet Connection.
- Select your network → Advanced Settings.
- Change DNS Settings to Manual.
- Enter your primary and secondary DNS addresses.
- Save and test the connection.
On Xbox
- Go to Settings → General → Network Settings → Advanced Settings.
- Select DNS Settings → Manual.
- Enter your primary and secondary DNS addresses.
- Save and test the connection.
PC Solutions
The PC platform is open and offers more options, but that also introduces variability. Based on player feedback we collected, the following two methods are both effective:
Use a VPN
A VPN is the first solution many players consider, with the goal of bypassing regional restrictions. If you use a high-quality or paid VPN, this will most likely work. However, due to the nature of VPNs:
- They treat all traffic the same.
- Even intelligent or split-tunnel modes cannot precisely distinguish Destiny 2 traffic.
This can result in high latency, disconnects, and other issues even if you successfully connect to the server. In addition, some regions have strict restrictions on VPN use.
Use GearUP
GearUP differs from a VPN in that it can precisely identify traffic for each game. It can automatically or manually switch routing nodes to build the best network path, fix connection anomalies, or help you connect to servers in other regions. Its advantages include:
- It does not interfere with other software’s network access.
- It constructs an optimized path.
- It is specifically optimized for Destiny 2.
- It does not violate related regulations.

Although it may sound complex, GearUP is very easy to use and is almost fully automated:
- Start GearUP and search for Destiny 2.
- Select the server you want to connect to.
- GearUP continuously optimizes in the background; you only need to launch the game. During the process, you can also adjust servers and nodes in the GearUP interface at any time (it will automatically re-boost).
Console Solutions (For PlayStation and Xbox)
Consoles are somewhat special: you cannot directly use a VPN, PSN has stopped services in Russia, and other factors apply. Consoles do, however, distinguish account regions, so:
PlayStation Players (Create a New Account)
PSN does not allow you to change the region of an existing account. You must register a new account, but this means your account data cannot be transferred to the new account:
- Go to Sony Account Registration
- Select a different country/region during sign-up
- Use a valid payment method from that region (or region-specific gift cards)
Note:
- PSN does not allow changing region on existing accounts
- You may need a VPN if the target region is restricted
Xbox Players (Change Region)
Xbox accounts allow you to change the account region directly, which is simpler:
- Sign in to your Microsoft account at account.microsoft.com
- Go to Your Info → "Country/Region" → Change
- Update billing address to match the new region
- Restart Xbox console to apply changes
Note:
- You can only change regions once every 3 months
- Some subscriptions (e.g., Game Pass) may require cancellation first
Use the GearUP Router Plugin
If registering a new account or changing your account region is inconvenient, or you do not want to lose game progress, GearUP’s router plugin is a good option. It currently supports multiple mainstream router brands as well as third-party systems such as Asus Merlin and OpenWrt, and routers popular in Russia such as Keenetic and Netcraze.
The plugin’s advantages are clear: install it directly on the router, no additional hardware required, no need to have your PC on, and you get full network optimization. Its effect is consistent with the GearUP PC version. If you are interested, installation guides for different router types are provided below:

Comparison of Different Solutions
In short, each solution has its pros and cons. If you are a veteran Destiny 2 player, choosing a targeted optimization solution may be more appropriate:
| Change DNS | VPN | GearUP / Plugin | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ease of use | Relatively complex | Simple | Simple |
| Effectiveness | Works for some players | Poor effectiveness | Works for all players |
| Other impacts | May affect connectivity | May affect other software | No impact on software or performance |
| Security | Basically safe | Risky | Very safe |
| Advantages | Standard method, no significant advantage | Effectively switches region | Effectively switches server / reduces latency |
