LAN Games vs Online Games: What’s the Difference
LAN and online multiplayer can look almost identical once the match begins. Four friends join a lobby, somebody hosts, and everyone starts playing. The difference is underneath.
A LAN game is built around devices communicating over the same local network. Online multiplayer sends data across the internet, often through matchmaking services, dedicated servers, or a remote player acting as host.
That changes more than just where you click “Join.” It affects latency, server discovery, internet requirements, privacy, and even which older games are still easy to play with friends.
What Is a LAN Game?
LAN stands for Local Area Network. At home, that usually means computers connected to the same router or network switch.
Suppose four PCs are sitting in one room. One player creates a LAN lobby. The other PCs can often discover that game automatically because all of them are already on the same local network.
The traffic does not need to travel to another city just to get from one player to another.
Some LAN games use a host player's PC as the server. Others support a dedicated server running somewhere on the same network. Older PC games may also ask players to enter the host's local IP address manually.
A true LAN game may not need an internet connection at all, provided the game does not separately require online authentication, DRM, or an account service.
That last part matters. A game can support LAN multiplayer and still refuse to launch offline because its publisher requires an online login.
How Online Multiplayer Is Different?
Online games are designed for players who are not sitting on the same network.
Your PC might be in London while your teammate is in Madrid and the game server is in Frankfurt. Traffic now has to cross routers, ISPs, and public internet infrastructure before the game receives it.
There is no single architecture used by every online title.
Some games rely on dedicated servers. Players connect to a server controlled by the developer or hosting provider.
Others use peer-to-peer networking, where one player's device takes on more responsibility for the session. Plenty of games combine several systems: an online matchmaking service may create the lobby, while gameplay itself uses a host or dedicated server.
That is why “online game” does not automatically mean “dedicated server.”

Why LAN Usually Feels Faster?
Latency is mostly about how long data takes to make the trip.
Inside a physical LAN, the trip is tiny. Your packet may go from one PC to a switch and then directly to another PC. There are fewer places for congestion or routing problems to appear.
Online traffic has much farther to go.
Intel describes latency as the round-trip time between your PC and its destination and notes that shorter distance to a game server generally helps reduce it. Wi-Fi can introduce another variable because interference and retransmissions may make that trip less consistent.
This does not mean LAN is automatically perfect.
A terrible Wi-Fi connection can still make a local game stutter. A busy or faulty router can cause trouble. The host PC can become another bottleneck if the game depends heavily on it.
LAN simply removes a large piece of the problem: the wide-area internet between players.
So Why Do Games Use Online Multiplayer?
Because putting everyone in the same house is not particularly practical.
Online multiplayer gives developers tools that a simple LAN browser cannot provide: worldwide matchmaking, friend invites, rankings, anti-cheat systems, account progression, cross-platform play, and centrally managed servers.
For a modern competitive game, those services are often more important than the raw simplicity of LAN.
LAN still has advantages of its own.
It works especially well for parties, local tournaments, private groups, dedicated-server communities, and older games whose official online services are gone. It can also give players much more control over who joins and which game version or mod setup everyone uses.
Neither system is universally better. They solve different problems.
Where Virtual LAN Fits In?
This is where things get interesting.
A virtual LAN lets players on different internet connections communicate as though they were part of the same private local network. That can make LAN-only or LAN-friendly games playable with friends who live somewhere else.
But the word “virtual” is doing some work here.
Your friend in another country has not physically joined your router. The data still travels over the internet, so virtual LAN does not inherit the near-zero distance of a real LAN.
NAT can also affect how two remote devices connect. Networking platforms such as Tailscale prefer direct peer connections because they offer better performance. When direct connectivity is impossible, traffic can fall back to a relay, which adds another stop and therefore more latency.
So a virtual LAN mainly recreates reachability and LAN-style networking, not the physical distance of four PCs sitting beside each other.
