Neverness to Everness Is Laggy Because It's New
Neverness to Everness is early in its lifecycle, and it shows. Players report frame stutters, delayed inputs, ping spikes, and the occasional flat-out disconnect. Most guides published in the first months of a game like this treat every problem as user-solvable, which is misleading. A significant portion of the lag is on the developer's side and will improve on their timeline, not yours. A smaller portion is genuinely local. Sorting one from the other is the useful thing.
Start with what's on the developer's side. New games at launch always overload their own infrastructure because peak concurrency arrives before the ops team has scaled capacity. The client itself is usually not fully optimized because studios prioritize gameplay features over performance polish for launch. Netcode gets tuned during the first year based on real player data, not theoretical modeling. Anti-cheat integration causes stutters that don't exist in later versions. All of these produce visible lag that no amount of local troubleshooting will fix, because the fix is a patch you don't have yet.
The rule of thumb: if the lag is universal (every player in your region complains at the same time), it's server or code, and it will get better on the studio's schedule. If the lag is specific to you (your friends on the same server are fine but you're not), it's local, and there are real things to try.
The local things worth trying
Storage speed. Neverness to Everness streams assets aggressively, and older HDDs or nearly-full SSDs will visibly stutter when new zones load. Moving the game to a fast SSD, if you have one, is the single largest fix for stutter-during-movement lag.
Shader compilation. First-hour play on a new install or after a driver update includes shader compilation stutters that will not reappear once shaders are cached. Play through them; they resolve on their own.

Because Neverness to Everness launched with limited server regions, a lot of players are matched onto servers geographically far from them. This produces ping that's high but stable, and no local fix changes it. The physical distance is what it is.
What you can change is the route your ISP takes to those servers. Default ISP routes to game servers, especially international ones, are often longer or more congested than they need to be. If your issue is a specific route problem, ping drops toward the geographic minimum and jitter flattens. A VPN is not a good substitute here. VPNs add hops and jitter, and new-launch multiplayer games often have anti-fraud systems that treat VPN traffic as suspicious.
What to skip in the early months of any new game
Reinstalling. Rarely helps for a stability issue and costs hours.
Graphics driver rollback. Occasionally justified, but the game's compatibility with drivers is being tested by other players in real time; if there's a genuine driver conflict, the community will surface it quickly. Roll back only if there's specific evidence.
Disabling anti-cheat or firewall. Won't fix lag, may create security issues, will get you banned in some cases.
Buying more RAM, a new GPU, or a new router because someone in a Discord said it fixed their lag. Usually a coincidence; the developer patched something around the same time.
What to expect over the first six months
Studios typically ship performance and netcode patches on a roughly monthly cadence in the first half-year after launch. Frame stutters, memory leaks, and matchmaking edge cases usually improve without you doing anything. This is the boring answer, but it's the accurate one. Games get better because they get patched, not because players discovered secret fixes.
The useful posture, if you're playing Neverness to Everness this early, is to fix what you can, ignore what you can't, and revisit any remaining problems after a couple of major patches. A lot of what feels broken now will simply not be broken in three months.
