You Checked the Server Status. Valorant Is Still Lagging. Now What?
The Green Dot Trap
Riot's server status page shows all green indicators. The official Valorant Twitter account has not posted about any outage. Downdetector shows no unusual spike in user reports. Your internet speed test returns 200 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload with 8 ms ping to the local test server. By every official and unofficial metric, Valorant should be running flawlessly.
Yet your operator shot clearly connected. The firing sound played. The tracer traveled directly through the enemy's chest. And the enemy walked away with full health and killed you a second later. Your ping counter in the top corner showed 25 ms the whole time. Something is wrong and none of the status indicators are flagging it.
This gap between "every monitoring tool says everything is fine" and "the game feels broken" drives more player frustration than an outright server outage ever could. When servers are down, you know what happened and you know the only fix is waiting. When they are green and your experience is terrible, the ambiguity becomes the problem. You do not know whether to blame yourself, your ISP, Riot, or some combination. Let us walk through the real causes of Valorant lag when the server status page is not the answer.
Network Buffering: The Hidden Latency Source
Modern network hardware buffers packets by design. Your router, your ISP's edge hardware at the local exchange, and even your PC's network adapter driver all queue packets temporarily to smooth out traffic bursts. For streaming video or loading a web page, this buffering is helpful. Packets arrive in a smooth stream and the user experience is better.
For Valorant's 128-tick servers, which send and expect game state updates 128 times per second, buffering is catastrophic. A buffered packet sits in a queue while newer packets stack behind it. When the queue finally flushes, the server receives a burst of outdated information about your position and actions, forcing it to correct your client with a sudden snap. This is what causes the "I was behind the wall on my screen" deaths that make competitive players rage. Your client rendered you safely behind cover. The server still had your last acknowledged position as exposed. By the time the buffered movement packets arrived, the opponent had already fired and the server registered the kill before processing your cover movement.
The practical diagnostic: open Command Prompt and run ping -t 8.8.8.8 while playing Valorant. After completing a match, press Ctrl+C in the Command Prompt window and check the summary statistics. Look specifically at the difference between the minimum and maximum ping times. If max ping is more than 30 ms above min ping, your connection has jitter. Jitter triggers buffering. The more jitter, the more aggressively network hardware buffers, and the more your in-game experience diverges from what your 25 ms ping counter claims.
Wired Ethernet reduces jitter at your endpoint by eliminating Wi-Fi variability. But upstream jitter from your ISP's infrastructure remains even on Ethernet. Changing your DNS server to Google or Cloudflare will not help here, despite how often that suggestion appears in community threads. DNS resolves a hostname to an IP address once at connection time. After that initial lookup, DNS plays no role in how your game packets travel. The problem is the consistency of the route path, not the speed of the address lookup.
The ISP Route Lottery
Your ISP decides the exact path your traffic takes from your home to Riot's Valorant servers, and that decision can change minute to minute based on automated traffic engineering. One match your packets take a direct route through well-provisioned peering points and you get a stable 25 ms. The next match, the same ISP's automated systems route you through a congested internet exchange three states away and your ping jumps to 90 ms with 15 ms of jitter.
This variability is completely invisible on speed tests. Speed test servers are deliberately placed close to users inside ISP networks to show the best possible number. They do not test the route to Riot's game servers. They are not designed to. You can partially diagnose ISP routing problems using a traceroute to known Valorant server IPs. The community maintains approximate lists of Riot's Valorant server IP addresses by region. Find a list for your region, pick an IP, and run tracert [that IP] in Command Prompt during your normal play hours. Look for hops that show asterisks indicating timeouts, or hop-to-hop latency jumps where one hop shows 12 ms and the next shows 65 ms and all subsequent hops stay high. That jump point is a congested network exchange.
If the problematic hop's hostname contains your ISP's branding, the congestion is inside their network. You can contact support with the traceroute evidence and request a routing review. Some ISPs will investigate and adjust. Many will respond with a canned script about restarting your router. If the bad hop is at a peering point between your ISP and another network provider, neither company is incentivized to fix it because peering disputes are complex and expensive to resolve.
When ISP routing is the confirmed cause and the ISP cannot or will not fix it, a game network optimizer becomes the practical alternative. Server Region Mismatch: An Account-Level Problem
Valorant assigns your account to a specific server region based on the country you selected when creating your Riot account. This assignment is not visible in the game client and the game never prompts you to verify it after account creation. If you moved countries, or if you originally created your account in a different region for any reason, Valorant will connect you to servers potentially thousands of miles away no matter how good your local internet is.
Check your Riot account region at account.riotgames.com. Log in and look for the country or region setting in your account details. If it shows a different region than where you physically live and play, you need to submit a region change request to Riot support. This is a manual process that requires proof of residence in your new country and typically takes several days to process. There is no instant workaround within the game client. No amount of network optimization will fix connecting to servers in the wrong continent. The region setting must be corrected first.
For players who intentionally want to play on a different region, such as joining friends who live on another continent or practicing on servers with a different competitive meta, physical distance latency is unavoidable. The baseline ping is set by geography. However, a route optimizer can minimize the non-physical portion. The Peer-Connection Factor
Valorant uses dedicated Riot servers for match gameplay, which is part of why its netcode feels snappier than peer-to-peer shooters. But the pre-game lobby, party voice chat, and some authentication handshakes with Riot's backend services still involve peer-like connections. If your NAT type is Strict or your firewall is blocking specific UDP ports, these ancillary connections fail or time out. The resulting lag looks and feels exactly like server delay during agent select and early-round buy phases, but it is actually a local connection failure.
Open Windows Defender Firewall. Click "Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall." Find both Valorant and Riot Client in the list. Verify that both have Private and Public checkboxes enabled. If either entry is missing, add it manually by browsing to the executable location in your Riot Games installation folder. In your router's admin settings page, verify that UPnP is enabled. If your router does not support UPnP reliably or you prefer manual port forwarding, forward UDP ports 7000 through 7500 and 8393 through 8400 to your PC's local IP address. After making firewall and router changes, restart both the router and your PC before testing Valorant.
Unlike a server outage where your only option is to wait, green-status Valorant lag almost always has a fixable cause. The key differentiator is whether the lag is consistent or intermittent, and whether it correlates with specific in-game events like agent select or round start. Those patterns point to specific root causes. Stop refreshing the server status page and start matching your symptoms to the diagnostics above.
