Gears of War: E-Day System Requirements and Best PC Settings

Before changing graphics settings, check the drive your game is installed on. For Gears of War: E-Day, an SSD is required. That alone may rule out some older PCs before GPU settings even enter the conversation.

There are also two sets of PC information floating around right now. Steam lists requirements for the full game, while The Coalition has separate specs for the current Open Beta. The Beta page clearly says those numbers are not the final launch specifications.

Here is what Steam currently lists for the full PC release.

One line deserves extra attention: Steam requires a hardware ray-tracing-capable GPU. An older graphics card may still run plenty of recent games, but that does not put it inside E-Day's supported list.

RAM is less intimidating. Twelve gigabytes clears the minimum and 16 GB reaches recommended. Storage may be the more immediate problem for a lot of PCs. You need 130 GB free, and putting the game on a mechanical HDD is not an officially supported alternative.

The current Beta makes the SSD warning even harder to ignore. The Coalition says HDD installations can suffer severe loading problems, missing assets, stuttering, and crashes. If you are troubleshooting awful performance from a hard drive, move the game first. Do not spend an evening turning every graphics slider down.

What Settings Should You Start With?

The Beta specs are useful here because they attach hardware to actual performance targets instead of simply saying “minimum” and “recommended.”

The current minimum Beta target is 1080p, 60 FPS, Medium settings with super-resolution. The recommended setup aims for 1440p, 60 FPS on High, also with super-resolution. Remember that these are Beta targets rather than promises for the October release.

If your PC is around the recommended tier, start at High rather than immediately copying an “optimized settings” list from somewhere else. Play for a while and watch the frame rate. A setting only needs to come down when your own machine gives you a reason.

For a minimum-spec system, Medium at 1080p is the sensible baseline. If the frame rate struggles there, lower the heavier options one at a time. Dropping everything to Low on the first boot makes it harder to tell which setting was actually hurting performance.

E-Day will support several PC scaling technologies, including NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR, Unreal Engine TSR, and Intel XeSS. NVIDIA's PC feature set also includes DLSS 4.5 and Reflex.

So use the upscaler intended for your hardware before making a huge cut to resolution. On a 1440p display, for example, that can be a better starting experiment than jumping straight down to native 1080p.

There is one Beta-specific catch: frame generation is temporarily disabled, and the current build has a 150 FPS cap. The Coalition says both are temporary limitations, so do not build a “final settings guide” around them.

A Few PC Checks That Matter Right Now

Drivers are unusually important during this Beta. NVIDIA users need Game Ready Driver 610.74 or newer; the listed AMD version is 26.7.1 and Intel is 101.8864. The current Beta will not launch on older supported NVIDIA drivers.

Intel Arc A580 and B580 users should also check Resizable BAR. The official known-issues list warns that these cards can lose a lot of performance when ReBAR is disabled. Above 4G Decoding should be enabled as well where required by the motherboard.

And remember that not every ugly moment means your graphics settings are wrong. The Beta is still being worked on, with known performance dips, crashes, visual popping, and streaming issues. A sudden hitch may be the build itself rather than a sign that your GPU needs another setting reduced.

Before You Play

  • Check that E-Day is installed on an SSD.
  • Update the GPU driver.
  • Start from the preset that matches your hardware.
  • Enable the appropriate upscaling option.
  • Arc A580/B580 owners should check ReBAR.
  • Change settings one at a time when testing.

What About Multiplayer Lag?

Graphics settings and online latency are separate problems. E-Day includes online Campaign, Horde Siege, and Versus, so a smooth 60 FPS does not guarantee a smooth connection.

If the frame rate looks healthy but multiplayer suffers from high ping or unstable routing, GearUP can be used to test another route for game traffic. Search for Gears of War: E-Day, start boosting, and then launch the game.

It cannot compensate for an unsupported GPU, insufficient RAM, or an HDD installation. Those need to be fixed on the PC side.

The Practical Answer

For the current PC version, 16 GB RAM, an SSD, and hardware around the recommended Steam tier give you the safer target. If you are closer to minimum, the Beta's 1080p Medium target is the better place to begin.

Most importantly, do not treat today's Beta settings as permanent advice. E-Day launches on October 6, and The Coalition says the final specifications will be updated before release.
