Why Your Ping Is High, and the Realistic Ways to Bring It Down
Ping is the round-trip delay between your device and a game server. It is measured in milliseconds, and it changes with distance, congestion, routing, and the condition of your local network. A speed test can look excellent while a particular game still has high ping because the test and the game use different destinations.
Find the limiting layer
Distance sets the minimum delay. A server on another continent cannot behave like a nearby server. Congestion and ISP routing add avoidable delay in the middle. At home, Wi-Fi interference, a saturated router, background uploads, and outdated network drivers create spikes.
The game type determines what is acceptable. Fast shooters and racing games generally benefit from staying below 50 ms. RPG and co-op play is often comfortable below 100 ms. Turn-based games tolerate more delay, but very high latency can still cause disconnects. A stable number is usually better than a lower number that jumps unpredictably.
Apply fixes in layers
