Palworld loads fast when everything works. You click your world, the screen fades, and within fifteen to thirty seconds you are in. When it breaks, the loading bar crawls halfway and stops. Or the screen goes black and stays there. Or Connecting appears and never resolves into gameplay. You force-quit, relaunch, try again, and watch the same freeze unfold.
Players reach for the same fixes every time: restart the game, restart Steam, restart the PC. Sometimes those work because they clear a transient memory state. But when they do not work, the real diagnosis has not even started. The loading freeze is not random. It is a symptom with a specific cause, and identifying which cause applies to your situation determines whether you fix it in two minutes or waste an hour reinstalling.
Check One: Is It This World or Any World
Before touching any settings, determine the scope of the problem. Your Palworld save is a world. Try loading a different world, a new single-player world with default settings. If the new world loads normally but your main world does not, the issue is save-specific. The most common cause: the save file contains corrupted chunk data, often from a crash that interrupted a world save operation.
For save-specific freezes, navigate to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Pal\Saved\SaveGames on your PC. Inside you will find folders named with random strings. Sort by date modified. Your most recent folder is the one causing trouble. Back it up to a different location first, then delete the most recent autosave file within it. If a brand new world also freezes on loading, the problem is not your save. Move to check two.
Check Two: Hardware Resource Contention
Palworld's loading phase is CPU and disk intensive. It decompresses asset bundles, builds world geometry in memory, and initializes AI state for every Pal in render distance. If another application is competing for the same resources during this burst, the loading process can stall indefinitely.
Open Task Manager before launching Palworld. Sort by disk activity and CPU usage. Common offenders: Windows Update running a background installation, a browser with thirty tabs holding active JavaScript, Discord streaming video in voice chat, any game launcher running a download. Close everything you do not need for the session.
The SSD requirement for Palworld multiplayer is there for a reason. Loading from a hard drive extends the loading phase long enough that resource contention becomes far more likely. If any packet in that sequence is lost or delayed beyond the timeout window, the loading screen freezes because the client cannot proceed without the server's go-ahead.
This happens most often on community servers hosted far from your physical location, on servers running outdated versions, or when the hosting provider is experiencing congestion. It also happens when the server is full, which some community servers handle by silently rejecting connections rather than showing a clear full message.
Test your network path to the server. If you know the server IP, run ping <server IP> -n 20 in Command Prompt and watch for packet loss. Any loss above 2% during the twenty pings means the connection is unstable enough to break the loading handshake. If you do not know the server IP, the issue can still be diagnosed: try connecting to a different community server in the same region. If that works, the problem is specific to the first server's connection path or configuration, not your machine.
For players joining friends on self-hosted sessions, the host's upload bandwidth matters. A host on a 5Mbps upload connection cannot maintain a stable session for more than two or three players, and new joins during high activity often freeze because the host cannot send world state fast enough to complete the loading handshake before the client times out.
Check Four: The Routing Layer Beyond Your Control
If none of the checks above identify the cause, the loading freeze likely sits in the network routing layer. Your ISP's default path to the game server routes through congested nodes that drop or delay the specific packets Palworld uses for world state synchronization. This looks identical to a game freeze because the client has no mechanism to differentiate between waiting for local disk reads and waiting for network data that never arrives.
